These Seasonal Ground Cover Statistics datasets provide long-term statistical summaries derived from the sentinel2-based seasonal ground cover v3 product, calculated separately for each ground cover fraction. Two distinct product types are available, differentiated by their seasonal aggregation and statistical content.

1. All-Seasons Percentile Summary (Product Code: aj6) This product summarises the 5th and 95th percentiles across all seasons for each ground cover fraction. It is delivered as a 2-band image, capturing the overall long-term minimum and maximum percentiles across the full time series.

2. Seasonal Statistics per Fraction (Product Code: aj7) For each season and ground cover fraction, a separate raster image is generated for the full time series of available imagery. Each image includes the following statistical layers: 5th percentile (minimum), Mean, Median, 95th percentile (maximum), Standard deviation, and Observation count.
Credit
We at TERN acknowledge the Traditional Owners and Custodians throughout Australia, New Zealand and all nations. We honour their profound connections to land, water, biodiversity and culture and pay our respects to their Elders past, present and emerging. This dataset was produced using data sourced from the European Space Agency.
Purpose
These products display the variation of the sentinel2 seasonal ground cover fractions over long term temporal periods (e.g. 2017-2024). These products are based on the JRSRP Fractional Cover 3.0 algorithm.
Lineage
Sentinel2 surface reflectance data > multiple single-date fractional cover datasets > seasonal composite of fractional cover > landsat-based seasonal persistent green > seasonal composite of sentinel2-based ground cover > seasonal ground cover statistics

Procedure Steps

1.

The long-term statistical summary products are derived from the Sentinel2 Seasonal Ground Cover product, also produced by the QLD DETSI earth observation team. The statistical products are derived from the full time series of imagery available for each season, defined by standard calendar seasons.

2.

Seasonal Statistics - 6 Band images:

band 1 – 5th percentile minimum - robust minimum value for that pixel over the length of the full time series (percentage)

band 2 - mean value for pixel over full time series (percentage)

band 3 – median value for pixel over full time series (percentage)

band 4 – 95th percentile maximum - robust maximum value for that pixel over the length of the full time series (percentage)

band 5 – Standard deviation - the temporal standard deviation of the full time-series

band 6 – Count - the number of observations statistics for that pixel are based on for that season only.

3.

Min/Max Statistics - 2 Band images:

band 1 – 5th percentile minimum - robust minimum value for that pixel over the length of the full time series (percentage)

band 2 - 95th percentile maximum - robust maximum value for that pixel over the length of the full time series (percentage)

Data Quality Assessment Scope
1) All the data described here has been generated from the analysis of Sentinel-2 data, which has a spatial resolution of approximately 10 m in the Blue, Green, Red and Near Infra-red (NIR) bands, and 20 m in the two Short Wave Infra-red (SWIR) band. The 20 m bands have been resampled to 10 m using cubic convolution, to provide a consistent 10 m data set. The imagery is rectified during processing by the European Space Agency (ESA), and not modified spatially beyond that.

2) The fractional cover model was compared to samples drawn from approximately 4000 field reference sites.
Data Quality Report
Data not provided.
Data Quality Assessment Outcome
1) The Sentinel-2 Data Quality Report from ESA indicates that positional accuracy is on the order of 12 m.
2) The fractional cover model predicts the vegetation cover fractions with MAE/wMAPE/RMSE of:
  • bare - 6.9%/34.9%/14.5%
  • PV - 4.6%/37.9%/10.6%
  • NPV - 9.8%/25.2%/16.9%.
