This dataset includes volumetric soil water content measured across soil pits in the lowland rainforest of Cape Tribulation. Data were acquired using time-domain reflectometry (TDR) probes recording at soil surface (10 cm) and at depths (50, 100 and 150 cm) at 4 control points - PB1 and PB8 are in the SW quadrant of the crane plot, PB2 and PB5 are in the NW quadrant of the crane plot.
Credit
We at TERN acknowledge the Traditional Owners and Custodians throughout Australia, New Zealand and all nations. We honour their profound connections to land, water, biodiversity and culture and pay our respects to their Elders past, present and emerging. The site is managed by James Cook University. This work was jointly funded by the Terrestrial Ecosystem Research Network (TERN), an Australian Government National Collaborative Research Infrastructure Strategy (NCRIS) project, the Australian Research Council (ARC), and the Queensland Government Research Infrastructure Co-investment Fund (RICF).
Purpose
This soil moisture data has contributed the current understanding of tropical rainforest dynamics and in particular to estimating plant-available soil water.
Lineage
The data were collected as part of the Daintree Drought Experiment established in 2015 in the lowland rainforest of Cape Tribulation. Data were collected across a total of eight plots which included both control and drought pits. This dataset includes only records for the four control pits since December 2019.
